Brooching The Subject

Obsessed with wearing brooches at the moment, especially a vintage hummingbird one (actually belonging to my Mother) that seems to work with absolutely everything currently on high rotation in my wardrobe... i.e: able to withstand the stifling tropical heat Queensland is experiencing. Here it is with 2 of my favourite options:

LOOK #1

For a day of babysitting & running errands, nothing beats easy-breezy layers. The white mesh top with embroidered flowers & buttons down the back adds shape to an oversized tunic yet doesn't add bulk or take away from the sweet ruffled tiers at the hemline. Moreover, the aforementioned silver hummingbird brooch adds a cute botanical touch to the mismatched florals & pulls the look together. Simply slide on a couple of silver rings (one of which has an onyx stone centre) & the jewellery is good to go.

Anchoring the look is my trusty pair of black patent sandals while the black & white zig-zag woven paper cross-body bag keeps the ensemble eclectic by providing a geometric counterpoint to the 2 aforementioned mismatched "circular" patterns.

For a day of rummaging around the Paddington Antique Centre & trying on copious amounts of jewellery at Thousand Island Dressing with my friend Robyn, this 1970s trapeze maxi dress was just the ticket. Its bright floral print, oversized pockets & tie neckline sees it smack-bang on the right side of whimsical & the silver hummingbird brooch simply adds to this, the bird positioned as though sipping nectar from one of the twee blue roses.

Rounding out the rest of the jewellery is my favourite silver cuff, inscribed with the words "All You Need Is Love" & an armful of funky wrapped thread bangles in different shapes, colours & patterns.

With such a vibrant look going on & with the weather so sticky & humid, only one hue would do - white. The white leather wedges with silver strap are comfortable & stylish, while the white leather shoulder bag is large enough to carry all of my essentials... possibly with a few new (vintage) additions...
