Saturdays spent antiquing are the best kinds of Saturdays, particularly when it involves a trip to the Wooloongabba Antique Centre with my younger brother Louis on the hunt for the perfect Mother's Day present!

Red was the order of the day when choosing my outfit - a rose printed stretch jacquard dress with stunning portrait neckline from Anthea Crawford, black leather laser-cut lace-up sandals from Novo for height & cherry red vinyl handbag from Nine West (a much loved birthday present from my parents). Statement jewellery pieces were chosen for maximum impact - a Tibetan silver cuff with inlaid coloured resin pieces & semi-precious stones that I found at a tiny vintage shop in Maleny on one wrist & a chunky African silver tribal cuff that a dear friend gave me as a birthday gift a few years ago on the other.

Catching a post-dinner, late session of Disney's The Jungle Book at Hoyts...

My verdict? I absolutely loved the casting, scenery, the cinematography & the special effects; in fact, they were so realistic that there were actually heart-stopping moments when you had to remind yourself that it was A MOVIE & a KID'S MOVIE at that (ahem, water buffalo landslide scene) but I was slightly perturbed by all of the modern speech & jarring use of modern terminology when it was CLEARLY obvious that this was a story set long, long ago. I understand that changes are often made to suit the audience of the day, but in some ways, it felt almost disingenuous to Rudyard Kipling's amazing, time-honoured tale of the "man cub" raised by jungle animals. I believe that children are both impressionable & adaptable & would have been still enjoyed the film (& been better served culturally) if more of Kipling's famed poetic language had been utilised.

Regardless, I would watch the film again (& again & again) so do yourself a favour & go to see it if you can!

Now this is the Law of the Jungle - as old and as true as the sky; and the wolf that shall keep it may prosper but the wolf that shall break it must die. As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back - For the strength of the pack is the wolf and the strength of the wolf is the pack.

Rudyard Kipling 1894

Commemorated ANZAC Day 2016 by honouring all those who served & who continue to serve this great country of ours in all theatres of war; including my maternal Great Grandfathers:

Private Andrew Mercer Millar
Service Number 480 (World War One)
Returned home to Australia in 1918.

Lieutenant Adolph Heinrich Jorgensen
Service Number 4472 (World War One)
Returned home to Australia in 1919.

Although they did not pay the ultimate price - the sacrifice of their lives on foreign soil - they returned to our shores & their loving families as vastly different men from those who proudly left to "do their duty" in service of King & Country...

They shall not grow old
As we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them,
Nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun
And in the morning,
We will remember them.

For the Fallen - Laurence Binyon
