Miegunyah

It's no secret that I love love love playing "tourist" in my own city, particularly when I discover a little gem that I just hadn't seen or didn't know about before. Miegunyah was jut this kind of surprise - as soon as I passed the sign while driving in Fortitude Valley, I resolved to investigate it fully at my earliest convenience, taking my history-buff parents along for the ride. Built in the 1800s by businessman William Perry as a family home hosting lavish parties & balls befitting the social elite of the time, it was subsequently requisitioned by the government during World War Two as a staging camp for the men of Z Special Unit before being divided into three post-war housing units & renamed Beverley Wood. In 1967, the Queensland Womens Historical Association (QWHA) purchased the home at auction, changed the name back to Miegunyah & began initial renovations... a slow & steady process that is still ongoing, thanks to the generous support of volunteers.

For the occasion - a tour of the house before homemade devonshire tea on the verandah - I decided to wear one of my most ethereal dresses in deference to the time period, made from the softest, sepia-floral-printed silk chiffon with delicate fabric tiers, voluminous sleeves & a button neckline from Saylor & Saige, a flesh-tone elastane slip from Taking Shape for modesty, bohemian-chic mustard velvet swing jacket with rainbow embroidery panels & purple tassels from Tree of Life to provide contrast while warding off the chill in the air, a pair of comfortable matte silver leather brogues from Country Road & a blush vinyl shoulder bag with silver hardware from Forever New to carry all the essentials.

Nothing better than a homemade scone with jam & cream, washed with down a hot cup of tea...
